bhumphre's life update
intuit the heart of all evil? 15:27:26 (02/24/03)
So what is probably not surprising to any of you, I did something that was pretty bonehead the other day. I purchased turbotax. However this isn't the dumb part.
? s than pleased. al. little to help me out IMO.

Phew, glad thats off my chest.

in laws & bsd 14:29:38 (02/14/03)
Well, ab's parents got into town two evenings ago, so most of my time has been spent with them,
if they hadn't been around, you would have seen much more activity on this site. However i have been a bit distracted.

So Apparently buildlinks has decided to keep me on full time. My start date is March 2nd, and I will be their fourth developer on staff. It is nice to finally be employed by someone other than a 'recruiting' service.

I'm slowly transitioning this site to a bsd box, so that I can do fancy things with this new protocol called CGI. Unfortunately on ol' masaka, someone turned off CGI. Hrmph.

But that is slow and painful, and I get roughly 3 hours a week to work on it, so expect that to be done in October sometime. I know you'll be on your seat until then.

Well, expect another update soon. I'd like to try to do this more often, however usually its only done when someone goads me into it.

sophist? 13:00:03 (10/08/02)
Well, its finally true. I'm off the proverbial snide. I am gainfully employed. Isoph (www.isoph.com) is a company that works for non profits. They make sites and software that enables non-profits to do e-learning.

So for now I'll be working for them. Who knows how long. But for now i'm a contractor-to-hire for them.

In other more personal news, i have finally finished my coffee table that I've been refinishing. It has taken a long time to get it finished, I started in april, or may, soon after dad passed. And I had to put it on hold while I got married.
But now it is finished, and looks georgeous. I have to say however polyeurethane is a big fat huge pain, especially with all its bubbles. I believe there is a better way to apply it than I did, but I did my best :)

Thats all for now. My mother is flying down for a weekend in two weeks, which i'm pretty pumped up about. With this new job I was able to find funding to purchase a new tv and a ps2. My old TV was made in 1982, and it was time for a new one. I must say however that old beast has really held up for the past 20-some years. I'm very impressed.

bye for now.

barefoot & jobless 11:57:32 (09/10/02)
Well, I'm still in north carolina. Still searching. Some of the jobs I've looked into are interesting to say the least. One civil engineering professor
wanted me to help his buddy write an app that was half written already in C/C++ and Fortran. The GUI was done in delphi. All written by about 6 civil engineers never together, but at different times. I don't know if it is even worth one's time. All the refactoring that will go on will be insane.

On the flip side, its amazing how much one can get done when you stay at home all day. I hung shelves, and ran conduit, made two trips to home depot. Staying home is great. However the pay is pretty poor.

o-o for now.

southern exposure 13:33:24 (08/28/02)
Hello again, it has been sometime since we talked. You may wonder where I have been all this time. Well, I've been on the lazy train to nowheres ville.

Tons of things have gone on since last I updated. The biggest of which would be getting married to Abigail, and moving to Raleigh. Yup thats right, I'm now officially a southerner.

Raleigh is really a great city. I wish it weren't so oversaturated with engineers, but beyond that I cannot complain. Carolina style bbq rocks. Its really a nice change, however its nothing compared to some of the stuff i've had in alabama.

I am currently a non-profit org (unemployed), and have no idea when I'm going to get a job. I've got half a mind to work an hourly job, and work on some software I've wanted to work on for a long time. We'll see if that ever comes to fruition.

Anyway, now for the big news. I am officially hosting .n. this weekend. Yes, .n. himself will be staying in my humble apt. this weekend.

Thats all for now. I hope to update this again, sometime soon, now that I have a bit more free time.

bank tyrrany 00:43:39 (09/18/01)
The past nine months have been a hard battle between me and my bank book. But i have finally won. Finally after 24 years in existance, i have balanced my check book by hand. This is a huge victory for me, i hope you are all proud.

Not much has been going on with me lately. I have found simple living to be just wonderful. Just not getting involved in everythign under the sun has been great. Allowed for time for a lot of things that i normally don't do on the side, such as reading

well, i'm exhausted,. goodnight.

I'm back? 00:45:18 (08/10/01)
Well all, here i am, back again, to give another thrilling life update. Not a whole lot has gone on since i'veen been away, okay thats kinda a lie..
I got engaged That has been the biggest excitement of my life so far. Abigail zechman will be my future bride, and hopefully she says yes again too :)

I also bought a a new car. thats right i bought a new subaru legacy, a spectacular car.

Other than those two things not a lot has gone on. I'm still living in columbus and stll reeally like my job. I'm currently working on a project for the country of greece. All java, some might think thats bad, but its not really all that bad. Its a great language, that is pretty nice to write in. Well, thats all from here. Night

at long last, and update!! 23:49:37 (02/20/01)
Much to everyone's delight, i'm finally updating my lifeupdate. can you believe it, it has been 6 long months since i've dusted off this ol' perl scipt to give a new update. But sure enough i'm doing it!

As most of you know i've quit grad school, and taken a job at http://www.aiinet.com i really enjoy working but i can definetly see myself getting bored after a couple years. At that time, or earlier i'll prolly go back to grad school.
Hopefully back to OU under good ol' sdo. But we'll se wher the lord leads me.

Abigail zechman is my girlfriend now. Want a wonderful woman she is too! she and i have been seeing each other for like 5 months now, well, i suppose 4.5 if you want to get technical, but who wants that? Certainly not me :)

Thats all that is up for right now. i'm exhausted and plan on going to bed here shortly. But for those of you who have been dying for a life update, and you know how you are, here it is. O

and one other thing, i now live in columbus and have moved out of athens. heh

Back in athens! 02:06:08 (09/05/00)
Well, i'm successfully moved into my apt here in athens. Things are good here. I really think i'll like this aptartment a lot. They guys seem like really good guys. The apt, needless to say, is a big mess, but what do you expect with guys moving into an apartment?

If you're wondering about my ongoing saga about my job, here is the jist of the situation. I have no idea what i may do. I havn't been formally offered the job yet so henceforth i have no decision to make. But when/if i do, that will be the hardpart. I do know that my commitment to Ohio is prolly for this whole quarter. So i will be in athens prolly till the new year. Plus i have a steady income with a company from WV that has contraceted me, so i will prolly not be leaving until the new year if i leave. Who knows what i will be doing. I don't. thats for sure.. :)

well i've got class at 8am in the morning. i need to get to bed.
night

Movin day! 01:10:22 (09/04/00)
Well tomorrow i will be moving back to athens for the duration. And no i still do not know what i'm going to be doing for the rest of this year. AI has not given me a formal offer. If one comes it will come soon, prolly next week sometime. But regardless i'll prolly have to be at OU b/c of my TA commitment for atleast the next quarter.

speaking of TA position. Remember that whole thing with Dr. Chelberg? Well, i originally told him that Dr. Lawrence hadn't scheduled me for an TAship. Well, hmm, aparently i missed that email from Dr. Lawrence, b/c i was going through old email and caught that Dr. L wants me in cs240a next quarter. grr. hopefully he and good ol' DMC will have figured things out by this point.. and everything will be roses for me :)

all in all it was a great week back home. Now school starts, and mentally i'm no where near ready. In fact i'm no where near ready for anything right now. I liked playing in california and this past week in ohio a lot. Oh well, real world had to catch up to me sometime :)

well, night all.. see you in athens hopefully.

Long time no Talkie 01:09:51 (09/01/00)
Well, it has been a while since my last update. Lots has gone on. First off we need to get something set straight. I mentioned my friend julie's cat named cutler. I need to tell you that the name cutler is a great name, and i shouldn't have ever given it negative tone. I met cutler tonight, and it is a great kittie.

okay now that that has been cleared up, lets talk about what has been going on. I had an interview with Applied Innovations today. I figured it would be no big deal. Well i got there and started the inteview, adn man were these people pumped up about what they do. Wow. Then they started asking me what i wanted to do. Firmware, Unix Server, Unix Database Server, HP-UX openview Client, Java Client. Are they serious? Wait, i didn't hear the two catch letters at all "NT". That was awesome. Then they asked me what i'd like to develop on. I noticed everyone had different desktops and hardware, some solaris, some HP some Dell running linux. I realized then that they were flexible. And they told me that whatever i wanted to develop on was fine with them. That as long as i was happy with it, and was productive! I couldnt' believe it. They they said i could use any tools i wanted to, there are no software directives or IDE's that must be used. That was awesome.
Other bonus was that they hav free pop (coke and pepsi!) free fusball, free pool (billiards) volleyball court, grills outside, it was nice.

So what am i going to do now? Who knows, they havn't offered me a job yet, so i really have no choices right now. We'll have to see. I'm pretty set in for grad school, but they could tear me away i suppose, it might be hard though.

so thats the deal with ol' bhumphre. Sunday i think i'm going to cedar point. then move in monday morning!!

I went to compUsa today. Went right to the apple section. Saw the new G4 Cube. I'm just saying that there havn't been many things cooler than that. Wow. That thing is awesome. Its power button is a touchbutton that glows. not like the imac's button, but more liek the glass glowed, and you just run your finger over where it glows and you can turn it on. When the computer is asleep the light pulsates.. it is so very cool, and extermely quiet. Wow, go to compusa if you have any intrest in something very very cool.

Well time for bed. night!

CSC, DSL, and other acronyms 13:24:31 (08/28/00)
Well, things are pointing in the direction that DSL was actually set up in my apt on friday. No modem of course, but hey, just baby steps right? :)

In other news, CSC sucks. Huh huh, stinky. pooh. They won't let you run any applciations from your zip drive. No ssh nothing. That really upsets me.

I hate netscape. If you've been following at all, my lifeupdates, netscape and IE are both retarded. hence the forced link to the beautiful ascii art that i was sent. oh well, better browser next time eh??

Well, i'm goin to back toledo now, in about a couple hours. Expect an update from good ol' t-town sometime soon.

ascii art 23:00:55 (08/27/00)
Todays update has a bit of a treat within it. I sent the DMC a recent email asking his assistance for something. I then got a vacation message back from him telling me that he wouldn't be able to email me back till such and such a day. Regardless of that, what caught my eye, is the following. Now what you see is not made up, not fabricated in any way shape or form. The DMC did send this, and this is his creation. Have fun
Okay, netscape and IE just murdered in my opinion the pre tag. GRRRR. here is a text file of what i originally wanted to show you...! AsciiArt.. have fun.
like that? thought you would like that. It is some of the most beautiful bit of asciiArt I've ever seen. It was really unexpected, and quite unreal!

Anyways, today i just hung out with heather and priced books all day. Looks like the cheapest are in athens.

One thing i noticed on the plane flight is this. Everythign is extreme. Big or small. For example: Big -- amount of people they fit in one plane Big: Amount of deaths if something failed Small: Amount of legroom Small: Amount of juice they give you when you answer "orange juice please" Small: The bathrooms

that's all for now, just some observations.. see you tomorrow

Life in San Diego 15:50:27 (08/25/00)
Well, i made it to san diego yesterday. I stayed the night at a friend's place in orange county. The family consists of three daughters and one son, it is a full family, but it was a lot of fun. For dinner there was a total of eleven of us!

Tanya and I crashed there for the night b/c i wanted to hang with our friend sara late that night. We got up the next morning (thursday) and drove to san diego. We got to tanya's house by 10:30 a Tanya's parent's are really really cool.

They are Russian, and her dad has two PhD's, one in EE and the other in CS. Wow. Unfortunatley he uses windows, and his machine is giving me the blue screeen of death right now. grrr.

San diego is a nice city though. The beach is definetly a nice thing to have, tanya and I last night, kicked it at the beach a while, and just chatted there. It was such a good time.

Although my time in cali has been really worthwhile i'm really looking forward to going home now. I'm really kinda getting anxious for school to start. I've spent the better half of six months considering grad school, and now i just want to get it
started already! And getting DSL hooked up into the apt :) Well right now, my friend wes is about half way done with the plan to ask carrie to marry him, I'm looking forward to calling him and seeing how it all went! that'll be monday's update :)

I leave tomorrow at about 7am, which means a 4am wakeup call, b/c the airport is an hour away. 4am, I'm pretty sure getting up that early needs to be outlawed... :) later

SLOly leaving SLO 15:48:54 (08/23/00)
Well, i'm leaving san luis obispo here in about ten minutes. Then i'm off to san diego. I'll let you know how the trip goes, with prolly an update late tomorrow. Hope everyone is doing good! Looked for engagement rings today with wes.. wow so much
to learn before i get engaged, its rediculous :)

later!

Lost wallet & wes 02:15:24 (08/23/00)
Well for quite some time tonight, I had a lost wallet. That was a bit scarey as i had to show ID to get back onto the airplane :) But it was just a misplacement, as i happened to slide behind one of my bags, and I just didn't see it.. PHEW!..

I spent all day with my friend wes, there was a suprise birthday for him. Man, so amazing this kid is. He really is spectacular. Its neat really, when i think about my friends out here in california. Many of them i never talk to, we just don't
do a great job of keeping in touch. But whenever i come out here, bam, things are good again. Even though about the only thing i have in common with any of my friends out here is my strong beliefs in God and Jesus Christ. Really spectacular to attribute my strong friendships to God, as really that is the only way i can explain them.

In other news, wes is planning on asking his long time girlfriend, carrie, to marry him. It is really interesting to listen to him and the fears he has, and the feelings he has about the situation. Wes and I are a lot alike so I tend to listen to what he has to say b/c i often am able to apply it to my life. But we spent last night planning on how he was going to ask her, really cool way he has planned. he's going to ask her on a local beach, pismo, and have a table out there, and have tulips cover the ground all around the table. Tulips are carrie's favorite. And ask her out there, while the sun is setting. Very cool wes, mad props.

i got no work done today for what i'd like to do with my lifeupdate script, nor any updating on my web page. Some time i'll do that. sometime. :)

Other big news was i met preed. And it was awesome. I did get a pic of him so no need to worry, I'll be putting pics up of him and myself as soon as i get this film developed... also other pics from my trip! :)

Nothing more to report today. I did spill a cup of coffee (cold) all over my pants tonight. It made for a good laugh from my three friends that were with me :) Leaving for san diego sometime tomorrow, prolly noonish, expect a short update then.

I'm realizing that san luis obispo is about the only place in cali i could ever move to. And i really really like it here. I miss my californian friends immensly. Oh well........ -beh

in SLO town, met everyone but paul 21:12:37 (08/21/00)
well the four hour car drive went well today. It was actually a really good time to catch up with an old friend of mine named tanya. I then met up with wes today, and we had some dinner together. Actually he ate, i watched him. Why? because I had
just eaten at in and out burger. If you ever ever get the chance to go to cali, and you happen to like a burger every now and again, i urge you to go to in and out burger. How amazing this place is. Wow. it isn't like an instant heart attack as McDonald's is, but it gets pretty close to it. But how amazing. me? I got a double cheese with fries and a strawberry shake. Yum Cali is treating me good, but the drive today reminds me why i'll never move out of ohio. Central cali and a lot of other placese in cali are so dry, so barren, so brown. Not like ohio. Even in athens, the hills are hecka green right now. Very beautiful, but not so in cali. But oh well, people out here wouldn't trade it for the world, i cannot imagine why, when you've got such a great place as the midwest.. oh well, i'll some day convince every californian to move to the midwest. :)

See you tomorrow... i think we are playing volleyball tonight, and then playing a game called warcraft, a command and conquer type game... later

cali and telnet 14:46:42 (08/21/00)
Okay so i'm off to SLO now, i'll be updating when i get there, it is only a 4 hr trip, so i may update later tonight, stay tuned :)

Also today my site got minorly hacked into by the guy i'm staying with here. it has taught me never ever ever never to trust telnet. Didn't realize how easy it actually was. Easy in theory and in practice.

sunday @ patrick's 02:45:09 (08/21/00)
Well, i'm about ready to get to bed. I picked up the new/old computer today. Havn't booted her up yet save for the time the original owner booted it up for me.

Today patrick, lisa and I went out to chevy's a popular mexicana restaraunt on the west coast, very good meal, and very good time with the two of them. THen patrick and I hit golf balls and geeked out a bit. Then came back and looked at pics from
their trip to hawaii, and ate some spectacular chicken. Lowry's salt with chicken, spectacular seasoning, who'd a thunk? Then he and i played a bit on the computer and just chatted it up, and he explained to be what he has been doing in XML lately for his job. It was a great day in san jose. He lives very near to where i used to live, keily and homestead for those who care, right in santa clara..

Anwyays, it was a bit weird coming back here. To san jose that is, especially after i lived here for so long, and how little i liked living out here, it was good to come back and have a good time.

Oh, he sent me this fairly interesting read written by the creator of fetchmail it is entitled the cathedral and the bazaar, check it out b/c it is worth the read.. http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/cathedral-bazaar.html

Tomorrow i will be traveling to san luis obispo and hopefully will be meeting up with all my coworkers tomorrow afternoon! I'll be there till wednesday at which time i'll go to san diego. I'll report in from san luis (SLO) when i get there.. bed time n nnnnnnnnn

day 3 19:15:39 (08/20/00)
I got to patrick's good time for lunch, will update later tomorrow,
check out http://www.lacson.net see you tomorrow

day 2 00:47:23 (08/20/00)
Well things are going well here. As i reported before, i am a bit burnt from yesterday, but my burn is feeling much better tonight than this morning. i leave tomorrow from sacramento to san jose for one night, to visit my old
roomate patrick. Very excited to see him, and will be picking up the new computer, which will be the future home of csallstars.net. Very near future. I'm l open to ideas for the name of the new server. Not sure what i'll name her. None of that Anime crap, :p but something interesting thats for sure. I've already got a name picked, but not sure if i like it or not. Need a suitable companion name to anna, my current linux machine.

Well i'm still not adjusted to west coast time, and i'm realizing it is amazing what happens when you get up early. I got up today at 6:15PST. and man, my aunt and i had all our errands run by 10am! usually i dont' get up till 9:30, let alone have errands done by 10! Rediculous i tell you, rediculous.

I thought more about the 361 TA position, man i'm so pumped. Hopefully the incoming junior class won't be as frightful as the past junior class, with few exceptions, they were, well... wow.

Well that's all from here for the night, 9:45, and i'm hitting the sac! awesome.. talk to you all tomorrow!

sat. in cali 10:47:24 (08/19/00)
Well, it is another great day in cali, got a bit burnt yesterday, but will run errands today... see you soon, expect an update later today.

TAship (update) 16:03:56 (08/18/00)
well, the news is final, here is what i'll be doing! Dr. Chelberg asked me to TA his 361 class. But not in the traditional sense. I'll be running a help session, students can ask me about written HW and prog. proj and i will work other problems not
assigned, here is the officail email --

I wanted to start an optional problem session each week run by
a TA to help students with both the paper homework, as well as
programs. Working extra problems that aren't assigned, and having
a chance to take a bit more time
going over examples from the letures I think would help the
students a lot. In addition, there would be some grading duties,
and office hours, but I'd probably get a grader as well to
offload some of those hours, bu duties

So there it is!

TAship 14:14:16 (08/18/00)
News of my future TA position is forthcoming.. as soon as the prof gets back to me, I'll be posting it.. stay tuned

html is funky 13:49:42 (08/18/00)
I just noticed that the HTML on this page is all funny and it spreads the tables to the left waaay too long. I made a little table at the bottom of this page to try to fix that to be a 'space eater' but it isn't doing its job :(
grrrrrrr

in the immortal words of 2pac, california knows how to party 13:39:54 (08/18/00)
Well i made it here in one peice. Things here are beuatuiful. it is only 10:30, and it is about 80 degrees here with no signs of clouds. It is awesome.

I'm staying in sacramento right now, and will be in san jose on sunday to stay with one of my best friends, and greatest geeks, patrick lacson. Nothing exciting is going on, but the plane flight was very funny. Expect a story on my web page about
it sometime next week. Funny funny rollerskaters

Anyways, that is all form here, i'm going to lay by the poiol, and read a while.. life is tough :)

Leaving Toledo on a jet plane 09:17:30 (08/17/00)
Okay everyone, This is my last lifeupdate while in the nasty constrains of ohio. No one has yet commented on my new sections of my web page. I'm thinking they will be verry cool.

A guy is doing woodwork in my house right now and he is using an air gun, Man, it sound so cool. Like he keeps shootin' people. Its awesome.

Well, that's all from here. I'll see you when I get to california. Who wants a postcard? I know youall do, send me your address and i'll getcha one.

before cali 23:25:03 (08/16/00)
Well, tomorrow i leave toledo to go to cali. Very excited about this. And i am going to be able to meet up with my friend julie for lunch tomorrow.. julie just got a kitten and i have a good idea what conversation topic will be.. BTW the name of the
cat is cutler, after OU's cutler hall. I have no idea why, but that is just its name.

In other news, I got a new update to lifeupdate version 1.1 :) It makes correct anchor tags for websites now. No email searching yet, but someone was sweating me to get this update out, so the email will come in the next version :)

i think the page will be at http://ace.cs.ohiou.edu/~bhumphre/software.html i havn't made the page yet so gimme some time (fifteen minute shoudl do me :) ) anyways...

So i'll be in cali tomorrow.. hopefully with a lifeupdate and a weather update. I'm so pumped up about going. And i should have pics up of my coworkers too! I'm very pumped up about meeting preed

well time for bed me thinks.. later

I'm Back!! 23:04 08/15/00
Well, i got back from michigan in one peice. It was absolutely beautiful up there for the four short days I was up there. I just love it up there :) I leave for CA on thursday morning, hopefully i will be able to meet up with my good friend Julie.

For those of you who follow the ongoings of csallstars, on sunday, i will be picking up the machine that will be the future home of csallstars. I'm very excited about this.

I will be on flight 1235 and 509 flying Northwest, so if anyone has ever had aspirations of bombing me, here's your chance :)

That's all for now.. i'll be updating soon again :)

new updater 15:19 08/11/00
well today the development server went down so i worked on an auto updater. I call it lifeupdate. Its slick. Except Ace sucks. You know ace's date command won't let you get the non military time!? How rediculous is that? Anyways enough of me.

For the next two weeks I'll be on vacation. Hopefully I'll be able to get you all an update quasi regularly. we'll see. I'll be in michigan and California in case you wondered.. --beh
